Philosophy
Angela prescribes to the idea of wabi-sabi; a Japanese tradition of celebrating the beauty in what’s flawed or worn.  There is no direct translation of wabi-sabi, but broadly it is everything that today’s sleek, mass-produced culture isn’t. It reminds us that we are, along with the material things around us, in the process of returning to dust. Everything and everyone is transient and impermanent. Her images aim to portray the beauty in the old, decaying and forgotten.

Style
Angela mainly photographs abandoned spaces. She utilizes natural light and chooses not to move anything within the buildings, favoring everything to be as it was left.

Technique
Angela shoots with film and make hand-printed c-prints, although she is experimenting with digital processes.  Her camera is always on a tripod.  Angela shoots long exposures and brackets like crazy to get the most detail from available light.

Background
Angela was trained at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Her passion for shooting abandoned spaces started with the Halifax Infirmary. Angela’s series on abandoned houses has been funded by Nova Scotia Department of Culture, Heritage and Tourism.  She has had work shown at Lost and Found, Dalhousie Medical Library and the Infirmary Health Sciences Library. Angela has a solo show coming up at the Anderson Gallery, Lunenburg, in June 2008.

Publications
Angela’s work on the old Halifax Infirmary was covered in the Coast, Daily News, and Chronicle Herald. She was also interviewed about the same work on CBC’s Freestyle.

Prices
Unframed, matted images are $350. Framed and matted prints are $500. All images are editions of 10 and are on 16x20 paper only.
