      Artist Membership

      ViewPoint Gallery is an artist-run co-operative whose members are photographers working together to nurture and promote their artistic passion and the practice of their craft, to exhibit and market their work, and to actively engage in the cultural life of the broader photographic community.    

      Photographers interested in joining ViewPoint Gallery may submit a portfolio for consideration by one of these bi-monthly deadlines: January 1, March 1, May 1, July 1, September 1 and November 1.

      QUALIFICATIONS
      • Practicing photographer demonstrating technical skill and proficiency in production and presentation of images in one or more photography-based media
      • Demonstrated ability to present a body of work that conveys/expresses a coherent point of view or artistic sentiment
      • Ability and interest to actively participate in the spirit and operation of the co-operative

      FEES
      Please note that there is a minimum one-year commitment with the first year’s payments being non-refundable.

      As an Exhibiting Member, you may hang new work on a monthly basis in Gallery B, with the same image not to be displayed for 2 consecutive months. You would supply this image in accordance with gallery policy. You may also have unframed prints in the side bins, cards and books at your option. You may mount a solo show according to the rotational schedule and approval of your exhibition proposal. You may vote at the AGM.

      Full time registered students may apply for a Student Membership which offers all the same privileges as a full Exhibiting Membership, including voting privileges, however students under the age of 18 are not required to fulfill the gallery sitting requirements. Upon graduation, the fees will revert to the standard membership fees at the time of conversion.

      As a Portfolio Member, you will have a print portfolio available in the gallery and may sell cards and prints in the bins in the gallery. You may vote at the AGM.

      Portfolio Boxes on display may be purchased through the gallery or independently by the member, but they must adhere to the gallery standard.

      • One share in co-op $30, required for all membership levels
      • Full Exhibiting Member Fee: $70 monthly or $840 annually
      • Student Member Fee: $35 monthly or $420 annually
      • Portfolio Member Fee: $35 monthly or $420 annually
      • Non-active Member Fee: $17.50 monthly or $210 annually (for existing members taking a minimum 6 month leave of absence)
      • Solo Exhibition Fee for Gallery A: $100 (Upon acceptance of exhibition proposal)

      RESPONSIBILITIES
      • Gallery sitting (on average 1 day per month) or the option of paying for a replacement sitter if you are unavailable ($10/hour; $50 per sitting)
      • Student members under the age of 18 shall not sit the gallery but are required to participate in other meaningful ways on committees or gallery operations
      • Support openings and other events
      • Attend regularly scheduled co-op meetings
      • Sharing of tasks: e.g. exhibition planning, installation, hospitality, PR
      • Supply new or alternate work on a monthly basis (same image not to be displayed for 2 consecutive months)
      • Arrange gallery sitting during own show (experienced sitters available at $10/hr)
      • Willingness to become an active participant in the co-operative framework and to commit to membership for a full year is an important consideration in reviewing the submissions of prospective new members

      SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

      • Maximum 20 exhibition quality printed images are required for portfolio submissions so that print quality can be assessed. Prints must be loose or matted with white or off-white mat board and be enclosed in a portfolio or other safe enclosure for the protection of the prints

      • Self-addressed stamped envelope for return of submission packages; otherwise portfolios may be picked up in person during regular gallery hours

      Portfolio packages may be left at ViewPoint Gallery: 1272 Barrington Street, Halifax no earlier than one week prior to deadline. Gallery hours are Wednesday to Sunday, from 12pm to 5pm. For summer hours, please check our website.

      Portfolios will be reviewed within 2 weeks and responses will be in writing. We are unable to provide critiques.
