Dick Groot

I believe a photographic image needs to tell us something interesting. Consequently most of my work has a documentary twist. I had my first solo show at ViewPoint Gallery in November 2004. It was a documentary about artists and artisans that had come from away and settled in the Minas Basin region from 1970s onward. In June 2007 I had a solo show at Anderson in Lunenburg called “Streets of Cuba”, images of life in those streets at the end of Fidel’s reign. In August 2007 I had a show jointly with Cuban photographer Ricardo Elias about defunct factories, “Prosperidades Pasadas” at the Fototeca de Cuba in Havana.

Currently I am preparing a book with Dutch poet Onno Kosters “Anatomy of Silt” which presents 12 poems and 14 photographs of my series “Tidescapes” of the Minas Basin. At this point my principal project is a portrait documentary of Dutch immigrants that settled in the Annapolis Valley between 1948 and ’58.

I work out of my LightThrough Studio in Wolfville with conventional and digital techniques depending on what I feel the expressive requirements are.
