Background ViewPoint Gallery is an artist-run non-profit cooperative located in downtown Halifax. With financial support provided by the Canada Summer Job program, ViewPoint Gallery plans to hire a Gallery Assistant for 35 hours per week for 10 weeks, beginning June 19, 2016 and ending August 27, 2016. The salary is $10.70 per hour. This is an exciting opportunity which will provide hands-on experience in a busy gallery.
The usual work week will be from Monday to Friday. In addition, the Gallery Assistant is expected to attend two-hour board meetings on June 19, July 23, and August 21, and exhibit openings on the first Thursday of each month.
Eligible applicants: are between 15 and 30 years of age; have been registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year; are Canadian citizens or permanent residents or have official refugee protection status under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and are legally entitled to work in Canada, according to relevant Nova Scotia legislation and regulations.
The Role of the Gallery Assistant The Gallery Assistant will be responsible for a wide range of administrative duties to assist the artists who operate the Gallery collectively. The Gallery Assistant will work closely with the Board of Directors and Gallery members. The Gallery Assistant will:
staff the Gallery during its hours of operation, greet visitors, answer questions, and handle sales; assist with new exhibits and openings; update Gallery records; update artists’ information materials and policy manual; provide information to the media and Gallery stakeholders; maintain Gallery and office supplies; assist with developing plans for Canada’s 150 anniversary of Confederation; assist with ViewPoint’s LGBT Shout-Out project; promote the Gallery through social media and other methods; update the website and artists’ information materials as needed; attend monthly Board meetings; work with Communication committees; undertake other projects as assigned or required.
Requirements A positive attitude; A self-starter who is able to work without close supervision and is also comfortable with asking questions and seeking guidance when necessary; Ability to multi-task and to work independently as well as part of a team; Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure; Familiarity with Mac and PC computers, Facebook, and other social media, as well as standard computer programs, such as Word, Excel, and e-mail; Excellent speaking, listening, writing, and editing skills; Marketing experience is an asset.
Additional Skills: The ideal candidate would have the following skill set: a demonstrable interest in arts administration and photography as a fine art; good problem-solving and decision-making skills; strong teamwork skills; flexibility and capacity to work with diverse people, while maintaining a professional attitude and composure; ability to work independently and to undertake and accomplish tasks with little oversight.
Field of study: The successful candidate will be a student of Fine Arts, Applied Arts, Public Relations, Communications, Graphic Design, Public Administration, Commerce, or similar degree, diploma, or certificate programs. This position will provide valuable work experience for students who are interested in working in the cultural and non-profit sectors.
Work Safety Plan: The Gallery Assistant will be given an orientation, which will include health and safety practices. S/he will be provided with literature, shown the fire escape route and informed of what to do in an emergency.
