Philosophy There are stories everywhere and everyone has personal stories in memory. When I am taking photographs, I try to capture a suggestion of the story behind the scene or subject and offer it in a way that inspires imagination or invokes the personal stories a viewer might bring to the experience of sharing the image. For me, connection between viewer and subject through the medium of the image is the goal.
Style Very much a “whatever takes my eye” photographer, I try to move no faster than a slow walk through a shooting excursion. Sometimes, everything is saying, “Pick me! Pick me!” When a subject seizes my attention, I attempt to capture that part of it that wants to be taken and shared.
Technique The technical aspects of photography are a continuing learning experience and much of my technique has developed through trial and error (as well as trial and success) discoveries. Of course, knowledge and advice given by other photographers is frequently beneficial. The discipline of trying to make every shot the best it can be and not wasting clicks of the shutter is my guiding principle.
Background I have been a life-long resident of the Halifax area. Currently, I live in Mineville, a more rural environment east of the city. Before retiring in 2003, I taught in public schools for more than thirty years and after retirement I have been able to pursue my interest in photography more seriously. I am a member of the ViewPoint Gallery of Contemporary Photography Co-operative.
