Philosophy
I craft images because I enjoy the creative process. You know that feeling you get when you do something you love, you feel alive, have boundless energy and wonder where the day went. I have a simple philosophy, I shoot what catches my eye. I am biased. Photographers choose the reality they wish to portray, I have experienced and seen some of the ills that beset our world and acknowledge the positive impact photographers can make in highlighting issues, making social statements and influencing social thought, however I choose to focus on the earth’s beauty and grandeur and hope that it continues to inspire me in the future.

Style
We are all connected, I do not walk alone nor do I wish to but by nature am a solitary person. My photographs tend to reflect my personality, landscapes and man-made objects rarely show people beyond the artifacts of their existence. If I do incorporate people it is usually for perspective or mood.

Technique
As a researcher I continually explore and experiment with the techniques and tools available to photographers. When shooting landscapes I primarily use a wide angle lens which is both challenging and limiting. Short focal lengths introduce distortion to perpendiculars and to the size of foreground objects relative to objects further away. As a result my landscapes rely on strong foreground objects and leading lines. I like to soften my photographs with movement like wind and water and combine this movement with saturated colours through the use of long exposures and diffused light conditions.

Background
Jarrell is based in Halifax, Nova Scotia having settled there in 2010. A native of Victoria, BC he has strong roots in Southern Africa where he lived and worked for many years. Raised on tales of adventure, a subscription to National Geographic and with a Masters degree in Geography and Geographic Information Systems, it is perhaps not surprising that this water loving citizen of the world enjoys exploring and taking photographs off the beaten track.
