Philosophy
I photograph the vernacular. The things in life left unnoticed and ignored, I find fascinating and extraordinary. Most often my subjects are those close to me; friends and family, street scenes and small spaces. They say you should work with what you know, and I find that growing up in rural Nova Scotia allows me to be familiar with my choice of subjects. I like to search for my photographs rather than stage it, and to take an easy-going approach.

Style
Documentary-type photos of vernacular scenes and subjects, in color or black and white.

Technique
Works with a Canon 50D digital camera, occasionally using a flash, soft-screen and polarizing filter. Prints are made on Fuji Pro lustre and Epson 260 matte paper.

Background
Graduating from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University in 2004 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, major in photography, Laura then went on to exhibit in the 2004 NSCAD graduation show with her work “Simbalacra”, and the NSCAD / University of Ulsan exchange show in South Korea with her work “Justin as Burt Reynolds: Portraits 1 & 2”.  Laura has been a member of Viewpoint Gallery since 2005, and has exhibited in several group shows, as well as showing “Simbalacra” there in the last 3 years.  Laura exhibited "Our Neighbour Bessie North" in March 2009, which was shown again at the Charles MacDonald House museum August-October 2009, and was specially exhibited for the Fieldwood Heritage Society in April 2010.
Laura was born in Halifax, grew up in Canning (Annapolis Valley), and currently lives in Dartmouth with her husband Saami, and her cat Lefty.
