Karen Nieuwland: Photographs of fifteen spiritual sites in Nova Scotia, including natural sites, churches on the mainland, to a Buddhist monastery, a synagogue, and African and Mi’kmaq places of worship in Cape Breton.
Through the fall of 2006, and the spring and fall of 2007, Karen Nieuwland traveled throughout Nova Scotia, taking photographs to accompany the text of a new book being written by Bruce Armstrong: Touchstones, Encounters with the Spirit of Nova Scotia.
From October 1 to November 2, 2008, photographs from the first 15, of the 30 sites chosen for the book, will be presented at Viewpoint Gallery.
For Karen, being involved in the Touchstones project has been the beginning of a journey of discovery and appreciation of Nova Scotia’s richness of spiritual sites, both breathtaking natural landscapes and ingenious human edifices. Sometimes hidden in the woods in the far reaches of the province’s rural areas, sometimes buried in the busyness of its urban spaces, these sites continue to inspire those who visit them - to wonder, to silence, to prayer, to meditation and to celebration.
