I began work on The Inscription in January 2007 after I discovered a love letter carved in bedrock on a beach at the mouth of Halifax Harbour. The letter is a heart-rending plea by its author, Tom, to his lost love, Bev, to return to him. The Inscription blends the carved words of Tom, the unknown author, with my own questions. “Why did Tom carve the letter in stone?” “Did Tom’s lost love, Bev, ever see the letter?” “What became of Tom and Bev?” And so on. I ask these and other rhetorical questions by overlaying text on my photographs. I wanted to create an art piece that did honour to this very moving document.
