Among the Vanities ~ photographs of the ViewPoint photographers

Exhibition dates: June 29th - August 2nd 2010
Opening Reception: July 1st, 6-9pm

At ViewPoint Gallery 1272 Barrington St, Halifax, NS
ViewPoint Gallery is celebrating its 10th anniversary year as a photography gallery and cooperative with a new show, Among the Vanities--Portraits of the Photographers. The exhibition features portraits of 23 of the photographers who are current members of the Gallery.

The object of any good portrait is to capture the character of the person being photographed. This sometimes hidden side of a portrait can make a picture go from ordinary to amazing.  In this case, since the subjects are themselves photographers, each portrait seeks to incorporate the subject’s own style and aesthetic into the final image.  The result is a unique collaboration between model and photographer.

The Photographers

Eric Hayes is a founding member of ViewPoint Gallery and co-owner of Bridgewater Photo & Art Supply Ltd.  He photographed the British Rock scene in the 1960s including Jimmy Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, and The Who. He moved to Nova Scotia in 1982 and won a National Magazine Gold Award for a photo essay in Maclean's.

Hannah Minzloff is actively involved in the local arts community.  In 2009 she was short-listed for the Mayors Award of Distinction: Contemporary Art.  She has received support for her work from Nova Scotia Tourism, Culture and Heritage and she has exhibited locally and nationally.  Her work has been purchased by the Art Bank of Nova Scotia, is represented at Art Gallery of Nova Scotia Art Sales and Rental, and is in numerous private collections around the globe.

Joseph Szostak has worked as a photojournalist and a fine art photographer. His photographs have appeared in publications including the Toronto Globe and Mail, Harrowsmith, the Shambhala Sun, and Halifax Business News. This is his third ViewPoint show. His photographs are also on display at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, in Art Sales and Rentals.

Monika Wright works in a variety of styles: abstract ‘Transformations’, travel discoveries and studio portrait photography.  She has trained in photography, painting and design in various parts of Canada and Mexico.  The NS Artbank has included her ‘In the Tequila Shadows’ in their 2010 collection.
